Dinner in the woodshed.

Just as we made camp, the rain hit us... Luckily, the tents were up in time, but with only an exposed picnic bench to eat at, it would have meant a soggy dining experience.

The woodshed was devoid of any wood (the posted notice of reporting wood theft probably meant it was still well in practice, hence being so empty) so that was where me made ourselves cosy and cooked up our evening meals.

Mosquitos aside, it was dry and a good dining spot..!

Will works his wheel...

The new tube goes in... Soon, we ROLL!

Not rolling, rolling, rolling...

Well, not yet anyway...
We were set to roll out of here by around 0900... Will did a tire-check and started to pump his front tire up a bit... Only to have it promptly fully deflate straight after... The Presta-Valve crapped out!

So now, denied a late room check-out by the somewhat gruff manageress of the motel, we are sat in the reception waiting for the local sports and outdoor gear shop to open at 1200.

The headwind is back to slam us in full force, and we know we have a steep climb back up out of Whitehorse... So by the time we do hit the road, we probably won't make that many miles today...

If we can knock out 40 or 50, that'll be good... By we'll see.

Rolling rolling rolling...

We are getting ready to roll outta Whitehorse...

The bikes are all very packed and heavy with supplies, as it looks like we have around 10 to 12 days out on the road with little chance of proper re-supply options.

Tom also got his zombie-face one, moisturizing like I did, to help combat the very dry skin we've all been suffering.

It may be a while before the next update, so bear with us.

Cheers...

Out and about in Whitehorse.

We went out for some more shopping earlier, all of us stocking up on some new needed gear, and some not so needed gear (yeah, I had to buy a new knife!) plus some freeze-dried meals for the road ahead.

Will also got busy, mixing it up with the local attractions...!

I noticed that McDonalds in Canada also has Canada's signature red Maple leaf prominently and pretty stylishly incorporated into the logo.

Although it'd be a large weight to carry, we are kinda tempted to try a 'Chicken in a Can'..!

The constant headwind and dry conditions have been taking their toll on my skin, so with much giggling and metrosexual jokes from the girls at the pharmacy, they helped me find some facial rehydrating masks, which now I'm back at the motel, I have slathered all over my chapped and dry mug..!

Will has headed off to the Yukon Beer brewery, to enjoy a tasting and tour session, and Tom and I are going to shop for our remaining meals for the days ahead. Plus a bite of lunch and maybe a movie later...

For now,

RWK,

Yukon; rough, tough & kicking our ass.

Its been a tough week. Headwinds... 40mph headwinds!
Rough roads... Tough but rough chip-seal and totally unsealed gravel roads.

The scenery has been great, although a few days ago, we were barely able to appreciate it... The roads we have been on heading towards and around Kulane Lake have been pretty well graded, so not many steep climbs, but they were often rough, bumpy and in many places, unsealed. That combined with the day-long strong headwind meant slow going.

We should have been able to clip along at a decent 12-17 mph, but even pedaling downhill, the headwind meant we were moving at a hard-fought 6 to 8mph.

Taking a break at the cultural centre at the southern end of Kulane Lake, we enjoyed a brief respite from the wind and some gorgeous scenery.

It was a long, long day, all of us feeling red-faced and windburned by the time we made camp.

Since that windy day, we have made further miles south to Whitehorse, but not before stopping for a very well earned and much needed break at Takhini Hot Springs.

The soak in the springs (for most of the afternoon and evening!) made us quite prune-like, but much better. And it was even more appreciated for the crazy very tough, long 'short cut' we tried to take.

About a year ago, when we were planning this ride, I'd googled the springs and marked them on the route. Being about 20 miles outside of Whitehorse, it meant a bit of a back-track to get to them. Trying to avoid that, I managed to plot an alternative route that was more direct. We knew it'd be on dirt roads, and when we found the turn off (well plotter on both my GPS watch and Tons Garmin) the road was a dual-track 4WD path, but in good condition.

We made camp a few miles down, looking forward to the mornings 15 mile quiet ride to the springs. The view from the bush campsite was amazing.

Moving out the next day, my Suunto Ambit GPS watch was guiding us perfectly... But it was the road that was becoming much less than perfect.

Including there now being a river across the trail..!

After a lot of lugging of gear and bush-whacking, we got across the water and into a rough rutted ATV track.

Tom took on the trail head first... Literally! A wayward branch caught him in the face, so he's sporting a pretty good war-wound.

Finally, we made it to some 'maintained' dirt roads, and a few miles later, to the awesome hot springs...

Covered in mud, soaking wet, and bitten to all heck by the damn mozzies. So yes, the soak in the spa was quite amazing..!

Now we are resting up for a couple of days in Whitehorse...
It's time to re-supply and rest-up before heading towards Prince George, some 1000 miles south east of us...

Cheers y'all!

Burgers at Beaver Creek.

Although we left Alaska and crossed into Canada some 20 miles ago, it wasn't until we were just outside Beaver Creek, battling into a good headwind, that we reached the Canadian Customs Border checkpoint.

After clearing the checkpoint, which was a nice easy process with the Canadian customs officer being cheerful and humorous, we continued on, faces feeling dry and wind-blown, to the small town on Beaver Creek where we stopped at Buckshot Betty's café to have a good feed. And what a feed!

After thoroughly gorging ourselves, we made the days final push to Snag Lake CG, another 12 miles south into the still persisting headwind.

Headwinds are not fun. Especially on the rough chip-seal Yukon roads were are now not rolling so smoothly on... But the scenery is still awesome!
